Everyone likes free stuff. So here's a selection of things you can try yourself
Wireless Security
- Change the default password and username on your wireless router-it's quite easy to find the default ones!
- Change the default SSID to something you can remember but not that identifies the type of router-dont use your house number, name and/or street address
- Use encryption-only use WEP is you really have no choice but WPA/WPA2 is really what you should be aiming for
- Turn off your SSID and use MAC filtering
- Turn off remote web management on the router
- Change the default channel-with some good scanning software, you can see your neighboring routers and put yourself in a "quiet" space
PC ConnectionDepending on your type of router, make sure that
- The connection from your router to your modem is properly configured for half or full duplex
- You configure your routers DHCP server for only a limited amount of users (say 10 rather than the default of 254!)
- You assign static IP address to your commonly used machines (helps for future troubleshooting)
- Your PC and laptop have their TCP/IP stack optimised
Remember-
