Maps

Below is a random area that been "mapped" to show the sort of thing we mean when we talk about security and coverage when you use a wireless access point.
  • Green is ok (WPA or WPA2 encryption)
  • Orange is dodgy (WEP encryption-I wouldn't recommend it)
  • Red is bad (no security!)
So basically if you are on this map, and your router is red or orange, then your security is compromised. How the map was done doesn't mean you have been hacked-it simply means that your SSID is broadcasting your details-so it's like your own little radio station, chirping away for up to 500 meters. Ok if you fancy being a DJ but not so good if you like to keep your private details private.

This map is of an area called Strathaven and was mapped in about 2 hours.Anything that is orange has encryption but can be easily broken-anything red has none and is open to abuse.

Over time we will be adding more maps, showing local areas with their wireless access points.Check out the Google Earth AP Maps page. These files are in a format called KML which needs Google Earth to open them up.Google Earth is free to download.Just click on the file and it should open.
